Vote for new leadership in our Bay Area Hospital Board of Directors — leaders who will focus on local solutions and oppose leasing and selling the Hospital to a private equity firm!

Four Board seats are up this election! Vote for new leadership:

Occupational background:
President, Primal Investments, Inc & Director of Operations at Yoo Jin Lodging, Inc.

Personal Statement:

I’m Simon Alonzo, and I’ve called Coos County home since I was nine. I’m running for the Bay Area Hospital Board because I believe our community deserves a hospital that’s not only compassionate, but also well-managed and financially strong.
As a business owner and nonprofit board member, I’ve spent years working across sectors to solve problems, manage complex budgets, and make tough decisions. I bring real-world experience in operations, fiscal accountability, and organizational leadership—skills that are critical for any board, especially one overseeing something as essential as healthcare.
Our hospital plays a vital role in our region—not just as a provider of care, but as one of our largest employers and economic anchors. It needs leadership that understands both people and systems. I’ll bring a pragmatic, solution-oriented mindset to the board, with a focus on transparency, responsible financial oversight, and long-term sustainability.
At the same time, I never lose sight of why this work matters: the health and well-being of the people who live and work here. I’m committed to ensuring patients are treated with dignity, staff are supported, and decisions are made with the community’s best interest at heart.

This role demands someone who can ask hard questions, listen carefully, and lead with both compassion and clarity. I’m ready to step up—and I’d be honored to earn your support.

Occupational background:
Emergency/Trauma RN, Care manager RN, OR RN, Professor for IRN

Personal Statement:

As a former ER nurse, community organizer, and spouse of a local family physician, I’m running for the Bay Area Hospital Board because I believe our hospital should be driven by care—not by corporations.
We’re at a crossroads. Outsourcing vital services to for-profit entities like Quorum doesn’t fix our problems—it extracts wealth from our community and silences the voices of those who care most: our healthcare workers. I’ve seen how burnout, low morale, and lack of local leadership have pushed good people out of the field. We can—and must—do better.
That’s why I’m advocating for a bold, community-first approach:
-
Build a strong workforce pipeline by partnering with local schools and colleges to train and retain healthcare professionals.
-
Give workers a voice by ensuring frontline staff are part of the decision-making process—not an afterthought.
-
Invest in alternative solutions like local administrative cooperatives and regional partnerships that keep money and jobs right here in Coos County.
-
Reject the Quorum lease and bring transparency, collaboration, and innovation back to our boardroom.
Our hospital should be more than a place to treat illness—it should be a pillar of economic resilience and community health. I bring frontline experience, systems thinking, and the courage to challenge the status quo. Together, we can create a hospital that listens to its people, supports its workers, and leads with integrity.
I’m ready to stand up for our future. I hope to earn your vote.

Occupational background:
Director of Coastal and Workforce, NewSun Energy; Treasurer, Oregon Center for Nursing; President, International Port of Coos Bay Commission

Personal Statement:

Coos County is where I have called home my entire life, where I am raising my children, and where my parents have retired. The success of this community is not just important to me—it is personal.
Our local economy and public health will be greatly impacted by what happens next with Bay Area Hospital. I cannot sit by and watch without at least attempting to be a part of the solution to the major challenges we are facing.
My background includes leadership roles in both public and private sectors, with a focus on workforce development, economic resilience, and healthcare access. I’ve worked on projects that bring people together—across industries and ideologies—to solve complex problems. I believe this type of collaborative approach is what Bay Area Hospital needs now more than ever.
As a board member, I will advocate for transparency, fiscal responsibility, and meaningful community engagement. Our hospital should be accountable not only to regulators and internal systems, but to the people and families it serves every day. That includes ensuring patients have access to timely care, staff have the support they need, and decisions are made with long-term sustainability in mind. I bring a fresh and realistic approach with a deep-rooted local perspective.
I’m not here to preserve the status quo—I’m here to help rebuild trust, realign priorities, and refocus the mission of Bay Area Hospital on delivering quality care to our community.

Occupational background:
Medical Doctor; urologist

Personal Statement:

I am Dr. John Uno. I practiced urology in Coos Bay for 30 years. When I retired, the Bay Area Hospital had over $150,000,000 in the bank. Now, the hospital is $50,000,000 in the red.
The current hospital board and CEO say that the only solution to the hospital’s financial dilemma is to lease the hospital and all that belongs to the hospital to Quorum, a predatory organization with an ominous history. Quorum has been in existence for nine years. Quorum originally managed 38 hospitals and now manages 12. Twenty-six institutions were either sold or closed.
Quorum is a hedge fund-owned organization that is primarily interested in the financial advancement of its stockholders. It is decidedly NOT interested in good and comprehensive medical care for the community.
I feel that there is another way to proceed with the hospital, another way which keeps control local and provides financial stability as well as promoting good and comprehensive medical care for the community.
I implore the people in this hospital district to elect myself along with Simon Alonzo, Brandon Saada, and Kyle Stevens so we may do our best to save our hospital.
